There was some familiarity about the draw of the AFC’s final phase of World Cup Qualification. Regional heavyweights Iran and Korea Republic (Sth Korea) have been drawn together in Group A, and Australia and Japan are drawn together in Group B.
The aforementioned are expected to fill the top two positions in each group and automatically qualify for the 2018 Russian World Cup. However, Asia’s 5th best team – decided by a Group A & B 3rd place play off – will participate in an intercontinental play off with the 4th placed CONCACAF qualifier. This leaves the door open for a UAE, China or Iraq to make it to the big dance.
